极可能是影史第一部动画纪录片，这种用动画来制作纪录片的手法在之后被《和巴什尔跳华尔兹》和《逃亡》等电影发扬光大，逐渐成为纪录片一种全新的形式。这部始祖短片的结构实际由「创作的记录」以及「事件的动画」两部分组成：短片的前半部分和寻常的纪录片差不多，实拍的片段加几行讲解的小字，简单交代动画人创作这个动画纪录片的起因，随后才进入正题，用动画辅以文字的形式回顾了卢西塔尼亚号事件始末，整体气质其实带有强烈的呼吁色彩，和如今的宣传片类似。
本片中最值得说道的就是用赛璐珞制作的动画部分，由于作画张数非常多，整个沉船事件极具真实感，残酷细节也一览无余，人群如下饺般落入水面的场景令人不寒而栗。但本片最大的问题或许也在于此，不像后世的动画纪录片基本有口述打底，这样纯粹想象而来的动画，细节纪实性有几何，让人疑虑。

As the ship nears its destination, she is struck and severely damaged by a torpedo from a German U-boat.
