@ProPublica There is a major split in the industry developing right now - natural gas only companies vs. electricity companies that also distribute gas.
Natural gas only companies look at going carbon less as a threat to the industry - because it absolutely is. Joint gas and electric companies are happy to get rid of gas, which doesn't typically earn as much as electricity. Electric conversion isn't easy at scale but profitable long term.
Eventually gas only companies will get bought by electricity companies and buildings converted, as running aging gas systems get less profitable.
California is leading the way with state regulators looking into how shrink residential gas but it it is going to take 20+ years.
Interesting times ahead for the natural gas industry.
