Jérémie Pastor returns to Saint-Martial for the funeral of his former employer, a baker. He spends a few days at Martine’s, his widow, who doesn’t want to see him leave. Vincent, Martine’s son, disapproves of this and the two men end up fighting. Jérémie kills Vincent. He manages to conceal that he is the murderer, with the unexpected complicity of Abbe´ Grisolles, the village priest, who provides him with an alibi in exchange for his affection.
