@abucci Nothing the "tech" sector has hyped ever *has* generated sustained and significant productivity increases (just a little spurt from '91 to '07), certainly nothing commensurate with the rolling hype-waves.

The data would look worse, I imagine, if we could accurately capture how much *more* time folks are spending monitoring work communications, dealing with myriad third-party apps required at work, and doing other generally performative stuff on devices outside of official work hours.

@fm2279 I think there's also an "artificial" productivity increase that comes from big firms seeking higher profit margins and laying people off, which happens a bunch in the tech sector. On the whole it's not that technological improvements are allowing workers to produce significantly more per unit time; it's that firms are extracting higher prices and reducing workforces. Apparently this has been ongoing since the late 1990s and is not a new or unknown phenomenon.

It's interesting, though, that individuals perceive a productivity increase, since the aggregate productivity in the entire economy is probably not especially related to an individual's sense of how productive they are at work and isn't increasing that much anyway. There are multiple levels of wishful thinking and misdirection at work, it seems.
