As Gov. Greg Abbott puts on his show at the White House to talk about dismantling the Department of Education and “returning” control of education to the states (remember, they never lost it), he’s actively destroying public education in the state of Texas.
Texas has implemented a voucher program to give families access to “choice” in education, so that private education can be subsidized, with the idea that they can avoid “woke” ideology in public education.
Because of how public school funding works, this is an effort to take funding away from public schools.
This is the current legal framework being used to harm public education in the state, since they currently can’t directly attack it.
The voucher program isn’t a “free ride” education program. It’s a subsidy. When looking at the fact that it could up to $10,000 per child per year, it sounds like a lot. But tuition can cost between $12,000 per year per child, up to over $25,000 per year per child depending on where you are in the state, before getting into “elite” private schools. Also, that $10,000 voucher isn’t a tuition voucher, but to cover all the child’s needs, such as food, transportation, etc.
This program will drive up demand for private schools. They will have limited enrollment and will be empowered to raise tuitions based on demand.
This is going to harm poor families. As more families opt for private schools through this voucher program, funding will be taken away from public schools, reducing their ability to provide adequate education, feed children who are food insecure, etc.
All of this to own the libs.
