改编自同名小说。全片只有一个地点——男主角居住的小屋，但故事却拍得惊心动魄、引人入胜。
顺便一说，非宫崎骏执导、但由宫老主要参与的作品，一共三部，包括《虞美人》、《侧耳倾听》、还有这部《借东西的小人》，这三部作品的导演，近藤喜文早逝，而另外两人一旦离开了宫崎骏，就没有什么好表现了。
