I guess I'm old enough that most of the world forgot that Google was founded on research funded by CIA and NSA. The relationship is literally older than the company. PageRank used some of the technology products of that work from day one. There is no reason to believe that Google has ever protected user data from the government, and there's also no reason to believe that any give Google staffer would have reason to be made aware of operations contrary to Google's public stance on the matter.
