any other copy running under someone else's control might be free for the server operator, but it can't possibly be free for you. that copy doesn't serve you, it serves that someone else who controls it, and it only seems to serve you in as much as the operator arranges for it to present itself as serving you

If that remote server is running 100% free software and the operator is your friend, it serves you just as well.

no, it serves the operator, who configures it to pretend to serve you out of friendship.

circumstances can change: friendships may turn sour, business relationships may turn to shit, and then everything you used the server for, everything you sent it, can be used against you.

then you realize it wasn't really serving you, it was only pretending to serve you, while serving someone else.
