嗜极生物的百科全书。读了半年多终于读完了,受益良多。针对每一种极端环境中的生物基本都是从环境的物种多样性开始,到基因组学,再到通路、分子和生物物理。比较有趣的是,偏离温和条件的两种极端采取的手段往往并非完全相反。比如对付低温的分子机理并非是把对付高温的机理反其道行之。读完感觉PV=nRT真的是个伟大的方程,囊括了一般能想到的环境里几乎一切的物质和状态:嗜高低温的核心是大分子结构稳定性和动态在熵焓层面的博弈,到了嗜盐卤开始出现了平衡静电相互作用,再到嗜酸碱部分质子浓度高低导致重点变成了化学势、电位和代谢,然后是研究较少的高压对密度和体积的讨论。最后一章还有点哲学思考,反思了一下过分的无孔不入的“达尔文主义”对思考生命起源的禁锢,非常精彩。
