Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI has released her long-awaited debut album, ‘Moonchild’.
‘Moonchild’, which is split into three sections, is now available in its entirety today (September 10), following the release of three singles: ‘Switchblade’, ‘Selene’ and ‘Lose’.
The 88rising artist took to Instagram to release a lengthy statement on the album’s release, chronicling its creation over the course of two years. “This… is two years of unrelenting work. I bent over backwards, almost quit, and lost my mind countless times before this album became the body of work it is today,” she said in the statement.
“To my fans reading this: I encourage you to please listen from start to finish, as it was intended. Take away from it what you will. Get back to me when you have it,” she added.
While the album does not feature any guest artists, its songwriting credits include contributions from songwriter Jacob Ray and collective Bekon & the Donuts, whom NIKI thanked in her statement. Montreal producer Pomo also contributed.
Apart from the album, NIKI has also dropped a brand new visual for ‘Nightcrawlers’. The video features the 21-year-old in a dimly lit garden under a full moon, donning a flower crown. The video has garnered over 50,000 views since its release.
The ‘Moonchild’ album comes a year after NIKI’s ‘wanna take this downtown?’ EP. That was the follow-up to her 2018 debut project ‘Zephyr’, an eight-track EP that soon saw the young artist get dubbed “the internet’s favourite R&B princess”.
Since the release of ‘Zephyr’, NIKI has become one of the faces of the label 88rising alongside fellow Indonesian artist Rich Brian – who recently released his own ‘1999’ EP – and Joji.
Prior to the launch of ‘Zephyr’, which put her on the map, NIKI opened for Taylor Swift at the age of 15 when Swift brought The Red Tour to Jakarta in 2014.
