"The feeling is ambiguous: a space can be vast yet a complete void. How do I relate to a space where no one else is really present? The life I left behind feels like a fuzzy illusion, and there is little control over what is to come. I keep helplessly pressing buttons to drift through the social vacuum and send out random signals. The signals die in transmission, but sending them means emitting life and hoping someone is there to validate.



Alien, the 1979 cult film, has been my lasting inspiration. Beyond being a masterfully made thriller, it always leaves me thinking of the protagonist – Ellen Ripley – as an ultimate loner stranded in space in hibernation for decades, hoping that her signal might reach anyone at all. I see so much dramatic intensity in that isolation: there is no relation to another soul, just to the endless cosmos around her."



ellen, a space lament, is recorded entirely with spectral synthesis – a type of sampling that works with chunks of audio information in a frequency domain instead of a temporal one. Small repetitions loop into infinity creating their own tones and textures. Modulating the position of the playhead with an LFO ever so slightly generates melodies; phase lock adds grain.



ellen EP is the first chapter in sp ce (pron. space), an interdisciplinary project that unfolds across formats through a series of releases on various media: from the rigidity of a traditional digital release to a live performance to a spectral broadcast to a different version pressed into vinyl. The core belief is that modern formats of publishing art are overly prescriptive as a vessel for a creative practice: from linearity of form to the fixed state of a release. The intention is to encourage a listener to experience the music and the story through different angles, each sonically, compositionally and conceptually distinct.

cadeu (Konstantin Kazhev) is a Berlin-based electronic music producer and sound designer who has been blending riveting club experiments for the past decade. His production style is a reflection of diverse influences: from the 90s rave culture to jungle to pop to idm to ambient and electro-acoustic pieces. Unconventional sound design techniques and vividly intricate textures is what makes cadeu’s work almost tangible. An alumnus of University of Arts in Berlin, he often pairs his music with academic research. He started out in the mid 2010s with a bunch of self-released EPs before getting noticed by Hyperboloid Records for a sequence of albums.

"Nel cuore dell’Ep Ellen di Cadeu si cela un’esperienza sonora che sfida le convenzioni e invita l’ascoltatore a immergersi in un vuoto pulsante di vita. Un viaggio attraverso le profondità dell’isolamento, ispirato dall’iconico Alien e dalla protagonista Ellen Ripley, che si riflette in un’astrazione spettrale e astratta, dove la comunicazione diventa un atto di speranza in un universo silenzioso. La sintesi spettrale, con le sue trame infinite e melodie generate da modulazioni sottili, crea un paesaggio sonoro che si dipana tra presenza e assenza, tra controllo e casualità.



Ellen si rivela un’esperienza multidimensionale che sfida le forme tradizionali di pubblicazione, invitando a scoprire un universo di significati e sensazioni da diverse angolazioni. L’Ep si apre con Helvetica Black, un brano che si distingue per un ambient drone intriso di malinconia. Cadeu dimostra tutta la sua maestria nel mescolare i suoni, creando un’atmosfera raffinata fatta di modulazioni delicate e timbri cupi. Il risultato è un paesaggio sonoro ricco di asperità e creste scoscese, dove ogni dettaglio contribuisce a un’esperienza immersiva e coinvolgente.



The After si presenta come un viaggio circolare, dove le melodie si sviluppano lentamente, crescendo tra strati di droni e synth che si sfiorano e si sovrappongono. È uno dei momenti più intensi e avvolgenti dell’Ep, in cui la musica sfuma dolcemente, dissolvendosi tra le vette più eteree e silenziose dello spettro sonoro. Un’esperienza sonora che cattura e trascina, lasciando spazio all’ascolto più profondo e contemplativo.



November Loop suona dolce e avvolgente, evocando emozioni profonde e creando un’atmosfera incredibilmente semplice e fluida. È come se tutto scivolasse via con naturalezza, lasciando un senso di leggerezza e meraviglia.



Ellen è un lavoro che conferma la capacità dell’artista di tessere ambientazioni sonore complesse e affascinanti, lasciando il pubblico avvolto in un abbraccio sonoro intenso e suggestivo."
