Skin is the anticipated debut album by Bangladeshi-Irish singer-songwriter Joy Crookes. The album was originally slated for a mid-2020 release, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, on January 1, 2021, Crookes took to social media to confirm that the album would be arriving in 2021.
In October 2019, Crookes revealed to Golden Plec that she’s planning on re-recording her hit 2017 song, “Power,” taken from her debut EP Influence, and including it on the album, too:
It’s going on the album, I’m going to rerecord it. New outfit. The lyrics to that song will be staying the same. I love performing that song, but it’s going to get a new outfit for sure. It deserves more love than it has been given already. It’s one of the best songs I’ve ever written.
Crookes also revealed to Hot Press in October 2019 that she had considered dropping a third EP after 2019’s Reminiscence (January) and Perception (May), but she ultimately decided not to, instead saying:
I love the songs that I’ve released, but I think EPs are a very minute scale. And I think that when I put those songs in an album, my story will make sense.
Preceded by a lot of cryptic posts on social media, the album’s lead single “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” was released in June 2021, with the album title, track-list, release date, and cover art all being announced in August 2021. The track-list omits Crookes' April 2020’s “Anyone But Me,” which was previously thought to have been the lead single.
