Arrangements, originals, quotations, and collages all together reveal an unparalleled compositional style on three intense CDs!
This is the music of B.A. Zimmermann, conducted entirely by Holliger!
Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918-1970), one of the most important and most unique composers of the postwar era, presents a 3-CD set that includes many of his first recordings. Originally planned for the 100th anniversary of B.A. Zimmermann's birth, all of the recordings were performed and recorded at the highest possible level, conducted by Heinz Holliger and produced by WDR. It is a set of great interest and a pleasure to have it so comprehensively assembled.
B.A. Zimmermann was the opposite of Stockhausen, the standard-bearer of the avant-garde of his time, and his style was based on a collage-like postmodern approach, in which existing material was recomposed in a new context. This was achieved through the technique and sense of color he developed while arranging various existing songs and piano pieces for orchestra from his youth, and his original masterpieces such as "Aragoana," "Concerto for Orchestra," and "Symphony in One Movement" and numerous arrangements are inseparable. Combining these works into a seemingly chaotic, yet perfectly formed recording, this album is a wonderful example of B.A. Zimmermann's dazzling musical world, which is made up of numerous allusions and rearrangements.
B.A. Zimmermann, who pursued his own path, took his own life shortly after completing "Stillness and Reversal" in 1970. Perhaps his music is more appropriate for the 21st century than for the 20th century, when the postwar avant-garde movement was in full swing.
