Preserving Cultural Identity Through Education

This study breaks new grounds by examining the impact of political and other factionalism within the community as well as the India-China conflict of 1962 that resulted in the closure of most of the Chinese-medium schools in Calcutta by 1980s. Study of Chinese Diaspora in Calcutta beginning in 1778, delineated in detail and with impressive documentation the mechanisms, curricula, aims as well as the politics of primary and secondary schools set up by the Chinese of the city from the 1940s up to the present time.
