1.首以〔緒論〕闡述南宋特殊的立國形勢與隨之衍生的政治文化轉變，協助讀者掌握南宋一朝的概略認識。
2.〔議題編〕跳脫傳統單一事件或領域的視角，整合南宋史各領域的成果，關注政治與文化之間的交互作用，尤其強調南宋晚期的重要性，希冀對南宋歷史發展提出較宏觀的論點。
3.〔研究編〕各篇雖有側重的主題，但主要都在呈現士人群體促成的社會力與文化力滋長：
(1)藉由士人間的藝文交流，得知世家大族如何以藝文建構傳承、拓展人際關係。
(2)分析士人群體以鑑賞珍稀文物作為交流媒介，如何由藝文活動發展為專業知識建構。
(3)以劉宰為個案，討論在政治與社會環境變化下，南宋士人在廟堂之外追求的生命意義。
4.〔評述編〕二篇，其一評述當代重量級唐宋史學者鄧小南教授所著《祖宗之法──北宋前期政治述略》，其深度非一般的書評可比擬；其二闡述已故中國社會史學者陶希聖先生思學歷程與其禮、律研究之貢獻。
