卢克莱修（约前99—约前55），罗马共和国末期的诗人和哲学家，他继承了古代原子学说，特别是阐述并发展了伊壁鸠鲁的哲学观点。《物性论》是卢克莱修的哲学长诗，于1473年首次整理出版，是现存唯一系统阐述古希腊罗马的原子唯物论的著作。全书依据德谟克利特开创的原子唯物论，以大量事例阐明了伊壁鸠鲁的学说，批判了灵魂不死和灵魂轮回说及神创论，将朴素唯物主义的观点贯彻于自然、社会和思维领域。
