Memoirs of Queer Space in China (2019)

'Queer Space' in China is an embodied representation of queer comrades' visibility in response to the identity and politics of queer comrades. This project aims to give new insight on and to survey the journey of Chinese queerness over the past fifty years, by articulating the relationships between queer comrades’ identity, queer spaces, and ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ pressures. Furthermore, this project aims to make up for the absence of Chinese queer studies within the discourse of queer theory and art in the global context.
Documenting and collecting visual depictions of queer spaces in post-socialist China is the key method of developing this research project. The semi-fictional memoirs in the project blend factual visual materials and fictional oral history based on real stories from the documented queer spaces. As Walid Raad (2008) describes, such fabricated documents – “fantasies erected from the material of collective memories” – offer the potential for communicating larger historical truths.
