A bachelor named Faun with a Don Juan complex, seized with a hypochondriac's fear of the ineluctable approach of death, enters a race against time's passage. Faun's sexual love is imbued with the narcissistic vanity of a self-satisfied bacchant who even towards old age can't manage to forgo his lifelong pose as an irresistable seducer of women. He desperately searches for meaning in superficial, fleeting sex.

Comedy with fairy-tale touches, about Kate, who wants to marry, and Mr. Devil, who is not interested in the heart or soul of this passionate and aging lady, but is interested in her good cooking – for Mr. Devil is a glutton.

This romance is comprised of three tales representing different aspects of love: temptation, dreams, and adventure. In the first, an introverted clerk takes his savings to paint the town red and winds up with a woman in his bed. Unfortunately, she is only interested in sleeping. Still he is tempted... In the second, a waitress on a train dreams of being a maid pursuing a singer. He rejects her, and she then falls for a medical officer who proposes. She gets frightened and jumps on a train where she meets a flirtatious gypsy. In the final tale, an orphan is invited to a garden party where he is treated like an old friend by the wealthy guests. There he meets a wonderful woman. The next day he goes back to see her. Unfortunately he cannot find the garden, his friends, or the girl.

Valerie, a Czechoslovakian teenager living with her grandmother, is blossoming into womanhood, but that transformation proves secondary to the effects she experiences when she puts on a pair of magic earrings. Now seeing the world around her in a different light, Valerie must endure her sexual awakening while attempting to discern reality from fantasy as she encounters lecherous priest Gracian, a vampire-like stranger and otherworldly carnival folk.
