In the animation Mother Land, the Yates, a nomadic tribe of Tundra, adhere to the traditional lifestyle despite the conciliatory and coercion of development. A little girl, Krisha; her younger brother, Kolya; and her mother and father live happily in the traditional way. However, one day, while her mother is ill and her father goes to the city to get medicine, Krisha and Kolya head out to ask for help from Red Bear, the sacred spirit and owner of the land. Although the film’s story is told through stop motion animation, the feelings it stirs equal and even extend beyond that of live action. Exotic imagination, narratives of nature and human confrontation, brother and sister′s adventures, excellent descriptions of forests, glaciers, snowfields, caves, and aurora, and accurately conceived and refined shorts all enrich Mother Land. It is such a lyrical and exciting stop-motion animation.

The film begins with the title Chorokbam filling the screen, which is amazing to see. This is the very moment at which the audience decides to trust this film without hesitation. In terms of how to fill and empty the square frame, the film is bold and skillful. Chorok, meaning green in English, is the color of fate in this movie. The problems of all the family members a hopeless father who works as a night guard, a mother who is completely exhausted with house works, a poor son who works for the disabled and their funeral ceremony are all dominated by the color, green. It is not bright or fancy but dark and scary in some sense. With attractive images and scenes, the film develops a series of worldly episodes of a family up to the level of poetic sentiment of blues and depression. (JUNG Hanseok)

Jinwoo, who resides on a sheep ranch in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do, lives a quiet life with his daughter Seol. Ranch owner Joongman and his daughter Moonkyeong treat them as family. Soon after, Jinwoo’s male friend Hyunmin arrives at the ranch, and reveals that the two have been long-time lovers. They dream of living happily with Seol in this peaceful place. However, with Jinwoo’s twin sister Eunyoung’s visit, the conflict begins. In fact, Seol is Eunyoung’s daughter but Jinwoo has been raising her because Eunyoung disappeared. Like the close-up scene of the sheep wool in the beginning, A Far Place is a story that is not noticed from afar but revealed when looked closely. The local folks, who seemed friendly and gentle, show their true colors, and become exclusive and discriminatory as they learn about the truth of the two men. Even the intentions of family members, who thought they knew each other well, feel like ‘a far place.’ Like Jinwoo’s mind, the beautiful autumn landscape of Gangwon-do turns into harsh winter, but the film believes there is still a ray of hope.
