Lee Gwang Jae is the son of a rich family who is reckless and immature. His father dies and leaves behind large debts. 아이를 갖지못하는 영순, 전쟁통에 홀로 남은 동생을 공부시키기 위해 후처로 들어온 경자, 두여자의 남편을 둘러싼 팽팽한 줄다리기가 시작된다. 그러나 차츰 서로의 처지를 이해하게된 두 여자는 친구가 된다. 외항선을 탔던 남편이 죽고 나자 두 여자는 남자 없는 집안을 꾸려 나가게 된다. 경자에 대한 사랑이 담긴 남편의 일기장을 본 영순은 질투심을 느끼지만 이를 자신만의 비밀로 간직한다. 한편 이런 사실을 모르는채 사랑을 찾던 경자는 결혼 때부터 계속 접근해오던 달중을 따라 야반도주를 한다. 혼자 남은 영순은 시어머니의 죽음을 겪으며 경자가 남긴 어린 아들 상민, 그리고 무거운 빚더미를 짊어진채 힘겨운 생활을 한다. 세월이 흘러 선창가를 전전하고 있는 경자를 찾아 집으로 데려오는 영순, 그러나 아들 상민은 자기를 버린 친 엄마를 받아들이려 하지 않는다. 아들과 극적인 화해를 하고 새로운 인생을 시작하는 경자를 보면서 영순은 왠지 모를 허탈감에 빠진다. 경자와 상민이 자신을 위해 생일상을 차려주던 날, 영순은 간직하고 있던 남편의 일기장을 경자에게 전해준다.
