A successful psychoanalyst's life is turned upside down by a very anxious and extremely clingy patient who starts dating his daughter.

Jean-Marie Poiré tourne « Le père Noël est une ordure » au printemps 1982. Le film est tiré d'une pièce du café-théâtre « Le Splendid », dont la troupe s'est imposée au cinéma en 1978 dans « Les Bronzés ». Rapidement, « Le père Noël est une ordure » devient un classique, notamment grâce à ses dialogues et répliques. Très politiquement incorrect, le film parle sans tabou de la misère et de l'exclusion, des associations caritatives et de l'hypocrisie sociale. C'est alors l'âge d'or du café-théâtre, des petites troupes indépendantes qui manient sans réserve l'humour et la critique sociale.
