Duke Philippe marries Cristina, the daughter of a fisherman. But his brothers, seeing that they would be cut from the family inheritance set to go to Cristina, decide to get rid of her by imprisoning her in a tower and making the duke believe she died.

Multiple stories intersect in this satirical look at misogyny, male promiscuity and oppressive behaviour: a wealthy man discovers his wife suffers from kleptomania and decides to help her indulge her vice; a retired circus performer returns to knife-throwing with his once-lovely assistant, even though his vision has deteriorated; and a lecherous college professor attempts to sleep with his attractive female students.

A fig tree growing in the estates of Baron Anteo Pellacani has been worshipped since the Middle Ages, after a Saint was supposedly martyred there. The Baron, who was crippled in a fig tree-related accident and has since become a raging atheist, vows to tear it down—until he mistakes a beautiful prostitute momentarily lying on the tree for the Saint herself, falling in love with her. Her pimp, his relatives and the clergy try to take advantage of his newfound faith.
