A story about Ômura Masujirô

赤線の灯は消えたか－－荒木信子は吉原をやめて、もう二度と男にふれまいと思った。彼女は夫に先立たれ、中風の義母のために仕送りを続けてきたが、売春禁止法の施行の前に死なれていた。が、彼女は白線の女島子の誘いに乗せられ、通称ヤッパのジョーの手に捕まった。更生しようと思っていた矢先である。信子は彼から逃げだし、やっとの思いで町工場に住みこんだが、ここの主人にいどまれ、また逃げ出す。お霜婆さんの屋台店を手伝い、少しは落着いたが、ジョーが現れ彼女を追着回す。お霜婆さんが不意に死に、後を継げそうになったが、それもジョーのために駄目になった。屋台で昔の同僚・葉室ヒデにあった。彼女は旅館を経営する父母の死後、家出しお定まりの吉原入りとなったのだ。もとの旅館の板前・宗吉が上京してきた。彼と結婚するはずだったが、隣家の売春婦とのケンカで吉原のことがバレた。宗吉には大きなショックだった。ヒデは彼を残したまま姿を消した。信子の口添えで二人は結ばれかけたが、宗吉はやはり昔のことが気になり、再びビデはいなくなった。ヒデと信子が偶然落ち合った先は、偽装売春クラブだった。信子はジョーの子供を妊娠しており、それを生むために自ら飛びこんだのだ。そこには吉原の昔の仲間が皆そろっていた。沖縄へ売り飛ばされるのも知らずに、ジョーがここの用心棒になっていた。島子が逃亡に失敗し、ジョーにリンチされたのを、信子はとめに行き、はからずも彼に会った。信子は島子を逃がそうとし、ナイフで襲おうとするジョーに言った。“お前の子を生むためにここに来たんだ”ジョーの腕から力が抜けた。そのスキに女たちは皆逃げだした。ジョーは女たちを追おうとする男たちを防ぎ、彼らに刺されて死んだ。－－クラブの親玉らは検挙され、信子たちは再出発することにした。

Pu Zhe, the younger brother of the Emperor of Manchukuo, Pu Wen, marries Ryuko the daughter of a long-established aristocratic family – all in the interest of the Japanese rulers, which legitimizes the relationship between Japan and its Chinese puppet state. To the surprise of all , a deep love between Pu Zhe and Ryuko develops. It is put to the test when Japan loses the war, Manchukuo is dissolved and the imperial court must flee. The lovers now have to separate: Pu Zhe tries to escape to Japan with his brother, while Ryuko flees with her daughter Eisei over the country. A film on the relationship between Pujie (1907-94), brother of the “last emperor” Puyi and his second wife, Marquise Hiro Saga (1914-87).

In post-war Japan, Michiko, a disillusioned young woman trapped in a loveless marriage, confides in her younger cousin, Tsutomo, and the two become close, but decide not to consummate their affair. He instead becomes involved with the flirtatious Tomiko, who is also conducting an affair with Michiko's husband. When Michiko finds that her husband has abandoned her, she decides to take her fate into her own hands.
