An elderly man's son, dissatisfied at living with his father's senility, forces his wife to abandon his father in the park. Another couple take pity on him and invite him to their home, but when they realize how much care he requires, they return him to the park.

Yeong-Ho is a son of second wife and enters his stepmother's as an heir. His stepbrother, Young-Min, is physically weak and frequently gets sick even by minor shock. To get away his girl friend, Myeong-Suk, Young-Ho makes Young-Min approach her. Myeong-Suk, who found something lacked in Young-Ho, starts a long journey with Young-Min. At that moment, Young-Ho suffers form the loneliness and longing for Myeong-Suk. At last, Young-Ho starts to look for her. Time passes, and Young-Ho decides to return his home, knowing that Young-Min has the qualification to inherit. On his departure day, Young-Ho calls Myeong-Suk, confessing his love and asking her to come back to him.

Once a bright and innocent girl, Gyeong-a (Lee Ahn-sook) overcomes the pain of being abandoned by her first love and becomes the second wife of a middle-aged man named Lee An-jun (Yoon Il-bong). But Yoon has a history of having driven his first wife to suicide through his pathological suspicions about her fidelity. Gyeong-a, who once had an abortion, is cast out by Lee when her past comes to light. She takes to drink, and is degraded to the level of a bar hostess by Dong-hyeok (Baek Il-seop). Then she meets an artist named Mun-oh (Shin Seong-il) and moves in with him. They embrace their mutual similarities and, in their own way, enjoy a happy life together. But Dong-hyeok comes looking for Gyeong-a and forces her through blackmail to leave Mun-oh. When she loses herself in severe alcoholism and self-loathing, even Dong-hyeok leaves her side. But Mun-oh discovers her whereabouts and comes to her. After watching her sleep until dawn begins to break, he leaves some money by her pillow and leaves the room. Gyeong-a continues to indulge in the bottle and has meaningless encounters with men. Then, one snowy day, she sets out to her hometown to visit her mother. In the mountains, she takes a sleeping pill and falls asleep in the snow, never to awake. Mun-oh scatters Gyeong-a's ashes on the river and looks back on her difficult life.

Byeong-tae (Yoon Mun-seob), a philosophy major at Y University, goes to a group blind date and meets Young-ja (Lee Young-ok), who studies French literature at H University. The young men and women of the 1970s, who have grown up under the influence of a rapid influx of Western culture, agonize over college issues, family conflicts, and their future paths in life. But such struggles are self-derisive, and they can see no tomorrow waiting for them. Between Byeong-tae and Young-ja, there is no promise of love, of any kind. They simply meet, and exchange meaningless conversation. Meanwhile, Yeong-cheol (Ha Jae-young), who always rides a bike and declares every time he drinks that he will set off in search of a whale, has feelings for another girl he met on the blind date, named Sun-ja (Kim Young-suk). But Sun-ja rejects Yeong-cheol, who stammers, has no prospects, and was even turned down for military duty due to health reasons, and he falls into despair. With nothing to look forward to, Byeong-tae and Yeong-cheol head to the sea. Yeong-cheol, who boasted that he would catch a beautiful whale in the East Sea, commits suicide, and Byeong-tae enlists with the military. Young-ja comes to see him off, even though she said she wouldn't see him any more, and the two of them kiss through the open window of the train that will carry Byeong-tae away.
