Ceferino, un joven asturiano, se despide de sus padres y de su novia para emigrar a México a hacer las Américas. Allí trabaja con un tío suyo que tiene una tienda de ultramarinos. Bajo su tutela, aprende rápidamente las triquiñuelas del negocio: un kilo tiene que pesar novecientos gramos. Se gana así el desprecio de su tía y su primo, que lo echan del negocio tras la muerte de su tío. Entonces se verá obligado a sobrevivir vendiendo libros por todo el país.
