高森昌宏因幼年生病，患上了听觉障碍。现在的他，正站在宫古岛举办的铁人三项比赛场上，等待着开赛。昌宏的妻子奈美子，也是听觉障碍患者。此时的她，正在妇产科的床上等待着生产。
他们二人在中学二年级时认识的，昌宏出生于福岛县郡山市，在一次全国聋哑学校笔友征集中，与住在北海道函馆市的奈美子相识。可是，喜欢摇滚、崇拜詹姆斯·迪恩的昌宏，与爱安静喜欢画画的奈美子，性格截然相反。没过多久，他们的通信就中断了。直到升上高中，两个人才重新开始交流。一次，昌宏来到北海道，看望奈美子，并与她在大沼公园里，用手语愉快地交谈。不知不觉，两个人互相产生了好感。
高中毕业后，昌宏找到一家大型汽车公司上班，并被分配到东京近郊的一家工场。他还加入了听觉障碍人士的铁人三项比赛同好会“东京之力”。与此同时，奈美子考上了札幌设计学校，虽然能力很强，找工作的过程却困难重重。
昌宏便成为奈美子不安心中的支柱，终于，奈美子在双亲的默许下，一个人前往东京去找昌宏。就这样，两个人开始了同居，并结了婚。在昌宏的影响下，奈美子也参加了铁人三项的比赛。两个人也迎来了爱的结晶。
昌宏在跑完铁人三项的马拉松之后，直接跑向了医院，从此，要三个人幸福地走下去。

少年山仓修（7岁）体弱，梦想着将来乘坐向往的火车。过了18年，慈祥的母亲去世了，山仓成为旅人来到了海边的小镇。在那儿，结识了健美男室田幸男。做金钱放贷生意的室田向尽做些古怪发明的山仓投资，却总是失败。
某日，成田和美来访室田的事务所。两人自幼是玩伴，14岁时常一起和7岁的少女夕子玩耍。那时成田宣言：“将来要娶夕子为妻”。三人如此约定。但不久室田也爱上了夕子，并向夕子表白了爱情。破坏了幼年约定的室田欲断指认责，成田上前劝阻，两人拉扯之中成田的手指竟然被切断。后来夕子也爱上了室田，与他生下了女儿沙耶香（さやか）。
成田的母亲，在放映自己年轻时钟情的男演员水城龙太郎主演的电影《上海归来的莉露》时，与过去的情敌相遇，放映结束后，两人飞刀互刺，相继身亡。
室田也贷款给恩师正田，但正田未能还贷便死去了，于是他女儿红子便在室田事务所做工还贷。不久，室田因强行催款而被以恐吓嫌疑逮捕。红子为他变卖家屋凑足保释金。接着，红子与室田一夜良宵之后离开了小镇。
山仓发现了侵蚀塑料的细菌，但还是以失败告终，遂决心再度浪迹天涯。
成田在母亲死后继承了母亲的首领职位而成为暴力团首领。
室田与夕子、沙耶香一家三口，亲密无间地在海上泛舟荡漾……
