It was the second time Delon had teamed up with Rene Clement:their first collaboration produced a great thriller "purple noon" .The second attempt produced a would be comedy which is not funny at all.The plot deals with fascists in charge of finding the antifascist printing houses. It's repetitive ,ponderous and boring.Barbara Lass was then Roman Polanski's wife and they came to France together at the turning of the decade.Lass's moment of glory was short-lived but Polanski would direct a segment in "les plus belles escroqueries du monde" a couple of years later.

La Bataille du Rail (Battle of the Rails) is regarded by many cineastes as the one truly great French "resistance" film. Based on fact, the episodic plotline details the courageous efforts by French railray workers to sabotage Nazi reinforcement-troop trains. The film's thesis is that this underground activity was largely responsible for the allied victory on D-Day. Writer-director Rene Clement enhanced the reality of the story by filming on actual locations and using genuine railway employees and resistance fighters in the cast. Admittedly slow going at times, La Bataille du Rail is more successful as a morale-booster than as pure entertainment.

Early Tati Feature With Some Good Moments, 21 July 2005 Author: Snow Leopard from Ohio A very young-looking Jacques Tati provides some good moments in this generally amusing early feature. The overall style of the comedy (which was directed by René Clément) is somewhat different from Tati's own, but with some hints in his character of things to come. The simple story has Tati's character working on a farm when he meets a boxer who is in training nearby. The early parts are pleasant, if a little slow, but when Tati gets in the ring with the boxer, the pace starts to build up quickly, leading to a madcap climax. It makes fairly good use of the opportunities, and it is particularly funny to see Tati's character keep trying to refer to the boxing manual. It's a good gag, and not an easy one to pull off that smoothly. No one would compare this with Tati's best features, but it is a solid comedy with some good laughs. If it had been a Hollywood short comedy of the mid- to late-1930s, it would probably have been a little above average.
