Athina Rachel Tsangari and Richard Linklater first met in Austin, Texas – just before he made Slacker (1990), in which she appears briefly on screen. Over two decades later, Linklater was shooting the third instalment of his Before trilogy in Tsangari’s native Greece – and once again invited her to join the production. In After Before, Tsangari turns her camera on Linklater (injured leg, worn Criterion Collection T-shirt), Julie Delpy, and Ethan Hawke during what may be their final day inhabiting the roles of Céline and Jesse.

The story centres on Blandine, who is depressed. Divorced, she now helplessly looks on as her only son leaves her to go live in Paris. Left to her own devices, she will suddenly reconnect with Magalie, whom she hasn’t seen since her teenage years. At the time, they were funny, close, carefree. They also shared a passion for The Big Blue. Actually, they swore to one day go to Amorgos, to try and follow in the footsteps of Enzo and Jacques Maillol. What if they went on this trip today? Even if they don’t have much in common anymore…
