Passionate romance, brutal treachery, and selfless nobility are set against the background of Napoleon’s 1810 invasion of Portugal.

When Parisian accountant Alex (Gilbert Melki) stumbles upon a routine identity check, he stops to watch. The police tell him to move along, but he insists on his right to do what he likes in public, a point of view that earns him a night in the cells. Still outraged in the morning, he is committed to a psychiatric clinic. Then starts an absurd and implacable machinery that plunges Alex inside a sort of kafkaian world. Once in the system, how is he meant to get out? Emmanuelle Cuau's Very Well, Thank You is a very realistic story of a normal man who got caught up in a system where giving a late sick leave's certificate to your employer can be a motive of dismissal, where watching policemen doing their job can be considered as an "offence". A system, eventually, that shows us that today's society don't take into account the individual, but on the contrary play with him through laws, abuses of power, lies and paperwork. A subtle, unsentimental political drama that is comic and horrifying by turns.

A man and a woman share their musings on love and freedom one summer night. The couple’s conversation meanders through memories, unspoken desires and passion through poetic dialogue.

1996 film by Manoel de Oliveira

Eloi, a paunchy middle-aged man, finds Samuel, a young sad sack, about to kill himself by plunging into the sea. Eloi takes Samuel under his wing, giving him a hot meal and bringing him to a seedy night club to introduce him to Esperança, who is said to be the most beautiful sex worker in Lisbon—and is also Eloi’s daughter.

After a love affair ends badly, a young Parisian named Paul sinks into the same kind of deep depression that led his sister to kill herself. He moves back home with his father and aimless brother Jonathan but refuses to get out of bed.

In their blue hotel room, a clandestine couple of two married lovers plan an impossible future, as death shutters their already frail tranquillity. Now, the noose tightens more and more around innocents and sinners; but, was there a crime?

The chronicle of a Portuguese family that owns one of the largest estates in Europe, on the south bank of the River Tagus. The Domain delves deeply into the secrets of their homestead, portraying the historical, political, economic and social life of Portugal, since the 1940's to these days.

A meditation on civilization. July, 2001: friends wave as a cruise ship departs Lisbon for Mediterranean ports and the Indian Ocean. On board and on day trips in Marseilles, Pompeii, Athens, Istanbul, and Cairo, a professor tells her young daughter about myth, history, religion, and wars. Men approach her; she's cool, on her way to her husband in Bombay. After Cairo, for two evenings divided by a stop in Aden, the captain charms three successful, famous (and childless) women, who talk with wit and intellect, each understanding the others' native tongue, a European union. The captain asks mother and child to join them. He gives the girl a gift. Helena sings. Life can be sweet.

João Vuvu, lives alone in a house that requires regeneration but due to being alone he is unable to do the work. On his son's release from prison and João's ensuing deception triggers a series of somber events.

In this symbolic and philosophically weighty film, all of the inhabitants of a Portuguese mental asylum suffer from religious delusions of one kind or another -- even the cynic who denies the value of any religions at all. One couple re-enacts the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden, and then the woman who played at being Eve plays at being St. Teresa de Avila. Another man thinks he's a character from a Dostoyevsky novel, and yet another claims to have in his possession a fifth gospel from the Bible. Everyone has a point of view and is not shy about stating it, defending it in debate with the others with great sincerity, though (the reviewers claimed) with very little elegance or wit. (Clarke Fountain) What would've happened if Lazarus met Nietzsche? The man who raised from the deads and the man who killed God are but two faces of the same soul. Oliveira let the books talk about human greatness and misery. If you are not interested in the theological debate, don't waste your time here. But if you're not interested, you're already wasting your time. (Dionysis)
