A major director of the Soviet sixties who continues to make internationally acclaimed films. A child musician and music student, Iosseliani switched to mathemetics at Moscow State University, then attended VGIK, studied directing under Dovzhenko, and graduated in 1961. His first major film, April, resulted in his being denied work for two years, during which worked as both a sailor and day laborer. He returned to direct films such as Falling Leaves, which takes a documentary approach to depicting Georgian life. His films took subtle, elliptical paths to critiquing the Soviet Union until he emigrated to France in the early 1980s, at which time his pictures --often still set in the Soviet territories-- became marginally more explicit. But his movies are much too concerned with universality, the mysteries of human existense and the beauty of nature, to be overtly political. Though still residing in France, since the fall of the Soviet Union Iosseliani has worked more closely with the Georgian film industry, and his pan-European productions have reached a wide international audience. A true auteur, he continues to write, edit, and act in, as well as direct, his films.

The horrific war in Chechnya, a neighbor of Georgia, gives a special poignancy to Otar Iosseliani’s fascinating, four-hour, made-for-television documentary on Georgia which, like his delightful Chasing Butterflies (SFIFF 1993), was produced in France. Iosseliani presents the history of this former Soviet republic through beautifully interwoven images of landscapes, artwork and clips from other Georgian filmmakers such as Nikoloz Shengalaya and Tenghiz Abuladze. He illuminates the part played recently by two politicians, both KGB men but with very different destinies: Zviad Gamsakhurdia, an ultranationalistic demagogue who died in exile; and Eduard Shevardnadze, who is the president of Georgia today. Iosseliani divides his film into three sections, “Prelude,” “Temptation” and “Trial,” which move from early Georgian history through the 1801 Russian takeover and on into 20th-century events—the Russian Revolution, perestroika and the recent civil war. Alone, Georgia gives a spellbinding evocation of this beautiful, hospitable land, whose torment is, according to Iosseliani, “a symptom of what takes place at this moment in our planet, and gives us a chance to measure the magnitude of the modern human tragedy.”

Otar Iosseliani recounts the lives of the monks of the Sant'Antimo abbey in Castelnuovo dell'abate, near Montalcino near Siena in Tuscany Father André Forest, Father Etienne Roze, Father Olivier Nelle, Brother Emmanuel Roze, Brother Jean-Charles Leroy. The film begins with this sentence: "If we want to know what value are the goods of the Earth, consider them the bed of death: these honors, these entertainments, these riches we will be removed one day. We must therefore work to sanctify ourselves and enrich ourselves with the only links that follow us in eternity "(St. Alphonsus Liguori). Then another text appears: "Here ends the first part of this film, the sequel will be shot in twenty years in this same place and with the same characters". It is a strange film since it is almost a documentary and it focuses much more on the work of the peasants than the life of the monastery

A deadpan, picaresque buddy comedy about two old friends through a series of urban adventures, loosely connected by the skull of an executed French aristocrat. Winter Song is a typically irreverent Iosselianian jaunt through a classy Paris apartment block contemplating the past, present and future.

Nicolas is an artist, a filmmaker who merely wants to express himself and whom everyone wishes to reduce to silence. When he first starts out in Georgia, the "ideologists" hope to gag him, concerned that his work does not follow the set rules. In the face of their determination, Nicolas leaves his homeland for France - the land of freedom and democracy. But the "state of grace" will not last long.

Under the premise of documenting for the sake of preservation the various forms of Georgian religious chanting, a distinct kind of sonorous psalmody passed over from generation to generation, what Otar Iosseliani captures in reality is the snapshot of a not-so-distant past that coexists with the world we might know yet transports us to what used to be.

Nicholas is the eldest son of a wealthy suburban family, whose businesswoman mother makes deals from a helicopter and has an affair with her business partner. His cheerful, alcoholic father, on the other hand, is reduced to a prisoner in his room with his devoted dog and electric train set. Unbeknownst to his parents, Nicholas works as a window cleaner and dish washer in a Parisian cafe. He is also in love with the daughter of another cafe's owner, who, however, has an abusive boyfriend. One night, Nicholas sneaks a few drunken drifters into his family wine cellar and his father unexpectedly takes a liking to the stranger.

A young idealist takes a job at a local state run winery only to discover and become disillusioned by the corruption of the Soviet State.

A critique of materialism, the film is about a young couple who live in a rundown empty apartment. Their love is so strong that it makes the water flow and the electricity work, but when they start purchasing furniture and knickknacks, they fight and grow apart.

Gia is a carefree young percussionist who works at a theater in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia. He lives in a small apartment with his mother. Gia spends his days flitting from friend to friend, lover to lover, avoiding any responsibility, and never staying still for five minutes. However, he always manages to arrive at the theater just in time to play the drums at the end of the ballet.
