From Trevico in the province of Avellino, a young man arrives in Turin to work at Fiat. Once hired, he will face harsh experiences as an immigrant and a worker.

Mario and Maria Boschi, a 30-year-old couple with small children, are hit by a crisis: husband and wife cannot agree on a party name. A colleague, also named Mario, makes an impressive speech, and Maria find herself increasingly attracted to him. She feels able to relate to him like she could to her husband in the old days. They spend the night together, and she falls ill. When she is asked by her husband to leave the house, she realizes that there may be a difference between real love and a vague need for understanding.

Don Giuliano Niccolini Borges, Roman prince and member of the Pontifical Noble Guard, is very much attracted to Jane, an English girl he has met that is accompanying him on a pleasure trip to Switzerland. He has some plans for hanky-panky on their various stops along the route, but Jane has other plans as she is only with him because his car has a special-identification license plate and can go through customs without inspection. The car clears customs as does the stolen million dollars she is smuggling. Sandro, her former boyfriend is following and plans to hi-jack the loot, leaving Jane empty handed.

Giulio is a 38-year-old intellectual stuck in a meaningless white-collar job. He realizes that this job will never fulfill his dreams of becoming rich so he comes up with a little plan involving land speculation: his company is planning to buy some land in rural Sardinia and build a new residential center there so Giulio plans to buy a piece of land lying right next to it and sell it later when the land value increases. But first he has to come up with 10 million liras to buy that land. He starts to visit his old friends and family members and tries to convince them to lend him the needed money. But his desperate quest for money is slowly making him more and more estranged from his wife and his best friend Sergio.
