北海道北端の網走刑務所。殺人傷害8年の刑で服役していた橘真一は、所内で起った脱獄騒ぎには眼もくれず、雑居房の仲間たちの羨望の眼差しに送られて仮出獄となった。さしあたって行くあてもない橘は「社長が俺の保釈金を出してくれる筈だ」という病身の葉山の願いをかなえてやろうと、釧路港の志村運送店へ赴くが、そこは運送店とは名ばかりでオンボロトラックが一台あるきり、とても保釈金を出す余裕などなかった。そんなところへ、オホーツク海側の港町に荷物を運べば莫大な費用を出す、という男・安川と金田がやって来た。ちょうど思案にくれていた橘は、葉山の保釈金を得るために、その危険な仕事を買って出たのだが…。

看板屋レインボー・アート社の親爺大作は、南条という男が居眠り運転する車にはねられて死んだ。雇人の定夫が後をついでペンキ屋を続けることになった。大作の娘のミヨ、ボーイの三平たちも賛成した。極東観光の事故係が、三万円で示談にしようとやってきた。定夫は憤然とし、極東観光へ怒鳴りこんだ。社長が南条だった。定夫は百万円貰って帰ってきた。レインボー社に井関という弁護士が現われた。井関は淡路の松平家の家臣で、先代のかくし子である定夫を探してきたのだ。定夫は淡路へ渡った。定夫は井関の娘和子に案内して貰った。定夫の義理の弟がダムで溺死したという話に疑念を持った。その頃、南条が秘書の由紀を連れて淡路へ来た。南条はここでキャーバレーを経営していた。さらに松平家の所有する旅館、牧場の買収を図っていた。これには、松平家の相談役溝口が一役買っていた。定夫が若い人のためのユースホテルを作った。開店披露会には、由紀も呼ばれていた。由紀は祖母郁代の知人であった。ホテルの地下室では、南条の子分たちがある装置を仕掛けていた。火事が起った。定夫は南条一味を撃退した。溝口は罪を悔い、由紀が定夫の実の母であることを話すのだった－－。

Namiko is married, but has an infatuation with Ishizuka who runs a nightclub. The businessman is also planning on wrecking the company of Namiko's husband. As personal lives and professional careers intertwine and cross one another including a love triangle dangerously, the affair is taken up a notch following a murder.

A few years after the surrender of Japan in the Second World War. The country is in ruins, economy devastated, and the vulnerable masses deprived of work; let alone the basic amenities of life. They choose the latter and decide to rub a money truck to ease the suffering and pain of their family members.

The film depicts how the work to build the Great Buddha overcame a number of obstacles as proponents and opponents clashed over the construction of the Buddha. This work is based on a play by Hideo Osada, which was performed by the Shin Kyodo Theater Company in 1940.

Mikami, a Japanese soldier serving in China, is captured by the Chinese. Although he is able to escape, his troubles are far from over. He returns to his unit but is treated with contempt for the disgrace of having been captured. Mikami falls in love with Harumi, a prostitute. She tries to convince him to desert from the army, with fatal results.

1969 film by Yasuzō Masumura

Everyone knows Kaneto Shindo from his horror classics 'Kuroneko' and 'Onibaba' and although they're both undoubtedly great films, I've been more impressed by his lesser-known works, like 'Wolf' and 'Human' and now, 'A Scoundrel,' which could be the greatest of the lot. Set in the war-torn 14th century, the film concerns the governor of a province whose chamberlain (the phenomenal Nobuko Otowa, Shindo's wife) tells him of a woman she knew in the Royal court whose beauty could tear a nation apart. The foreshadowing is not so subtle. 'A Scoundrel' was co-written by Shindo and Japan's beloved Junichiro Tanizaki (an author who has not impressed me much, although I've only read very little), and is at once humorous, suspenseful, gruesome, and absolutely fascinating.

When the only son of a working class woman is fatally struck by a car driven by the adulterous wife of a company president in a hit-and-run, the victim's mother changes her identity and infiltrates the couple's home to work as their maid, plotting to murder their similarly-aged son.

Like many women after the war, Toshiko works as a chorus girl; her boyfriend Tadashi wishes she'd join him more frequently, but she detests his criminal involvement.
