Among the elderly who attend the day care facility "Ijinzaka Clinic," a groundbreaking treatment devised by the director, Tadashi Urushihara, was secretly spreading. This medical procedure, which aims for cost-effective care, deals with "disused limbs" (limbs that are unlikely to recover due to paralysis, etc.), and unexpected "positive side effects" have appeared, such as "my body and mind feel lighter" and "my harsh personality has softened." Editor Shuntaro Yagura, who hears the rumors, senses the potential to revolutionize geriatric medicine and approaches Tadashi about publishing a book. However, everything takes a dark turn when an internal whistleblower report about the day care facility is leaked to a weekly magazine, and then a shocking incident occurs at a patient's home.

痴呆の症状が進行しつつある母親を、たったひとりで在宅介護している息子。日々の家事をこなしながら、ただ黙々と母の世話をする青年の姿は、声高に吐露する以上に雄弁にその状況を語り、見る者の胸を深くえぐる。 ロカルノ国際映画祭は、常に日本映画に注目してきた。昨年は小林政広監督の「愛の予感」が金豹賞を受賞した。今年も新鋭監督部門 ( Cinéastes du présent ) で吉田光希 ( こうき ) 監督 ( 27歳 ) の「症例X」が選出され11日、公開された。 同作品は、今年の「第30回ぴあフィルムフェスティバル」で審査員特別賞を受賞し、ロカルノのアートディレクター、フレデリック・メール氏の目に留まった。2005年のロカルノ国際映画祭の審査員特別賞を受賞した｢不完全なふたり｣の諏訪敦彦 ( のぶひろ ) 氏に指導を仰ぐ吉田氏の5本目の作品である。
