Jerzy Szajnowicz-Ivanov, the son of a Polish mother and a Russian father, raised in Greece, reports to the Carpathian Brigade in the spring of 1941. While the Poles are wary of him at first, he proves his worth by taking part in several sabotage actions against the Nazis.

A lonely Border Guard officer, with a girl and a former villain, has to face a local corrupt Militia commandant and his people in wild Bieszczady Mountains in the Polish East.

He and she face the end of their relationship. Trying to understand how they got to this point, the two characters rebuild their story by reliving key moments of their life together. However, these glimpses of the times gone by are critical, detached, ironic, proving that sometimes nothing is more unpredictable than the past.

All the ambiance of an old-fashioned circus comes across with great clarity in this otherwise routine psychological tale about a mean-spirited mime and his effects on his colleagues. The small, traveling circus has been sliding downhill for awhile, and unless some new life is infused into its acts, its future does not look very rosy. Into this precarious situation comes a new mime with the uncanny ability to sap the confidence of his fellow performers. If he continues for long in this vein, no one will be able to believe they have any talent left at all.
