Alors qu'elle gare sa berline, Miriam Cohen, une jeune femme obèse, est percutée par un beau jeune homme, Kai Neuman, au volant d'une décapotable. Furieux, celui-ci commence par insulter Miriam avant de se raviser. Tous deux échangent leurs coordonnées. Kai décide de confier la réparation de sa voiture à un ami garagiste et se présente, dès le lendemain, à la résidence des Cohen, un bouquet de fleurs à la main. Il propose à Miriam un arrangement permettant d'éviter l'intervention des compagnies d'assurance. S'ensuivent d'autres rencontres, qui permettent aux deux jeunes gens de s'éprendre l'un de l'autre. Les amis de Kai et la famille de Miriam, incapables de comprendre leur relation, se montrent odieux envers eux.
