The old forester dies in a fight with poachers, and his faithful friend, the lynx Kunak, goes into the taiga. The new forester Drozdov wants to bring Kunak back and patiently accustoms the lynx to himself.

He takes it with him to his log cabin and calls it Kunak, which means friend. The young lynx gets used to the human environment. He grows up to become a stately lynx. When he attacks a rooster one day, he is sent away...
The story is mixed with lots of beautiful nature documentary footage.
