directed by Jang Sun-Woo is a personal essay on Korean cinema told as a journey through a country torn by war and crushed by military dictatorships and colonial oppression. The journey takes Jang Sun-Woo from Seoul to the de-militarised zone near the North Korean border, interviewing noted filmmakers, local farmers, and cinema-managers along the way, looking for the essence of the much-censored national cinema.

R (Moon Sung-keun) returns from studying in France and reunites with J (Kang Soo-yeon), whom he used to live with in Paris. For some reason, however, J refuses to have sex with R. Angered by her refusal, R travels to his hometown of Daegu. He sees his wife (Kim Bo-yeon) and children for the first time in years, but not only is he less than thrilled to be with them but he actually finds himself despising them. R's head is filled with thoughts of having sex with J. He sees J every time he comes to Seoul on business, but she keeps resisting his demand for sex on the unconvincing pretext that they are not in France, and he begins to grow tired. R feels betrayed when he finds out that J is rejecting him because she plans to marry another man, even though she received her Ph.D. in France for a dissertation that he wrote for her and even debuted as a literary critic in Korea with a piece that he composed. Reproaching J yet unable to leave her, R informs his wife of his intention to get a divorce and proposes to J that they leave Korea together. However, R is once again betrayed by J.

Bae Il-do, who feels unappreciated in his rural village, runs away from home and works as a tailor. His wife grew up under a harsh stepmother and worked as a housekeeper and bar hostess before meeting Il-do, for whom she bore a child. The young and attractive Gong-rye comes between them, having an affair with Il-do while working with him in a garment factory. Their secret meetings don't remain secret for long and Il-do's wife inevitably finds out...

A young boy mourns the death of his father, and begins a quest to find his mother. He encounters many people on the way who quote Buddhist precepts: an eccentric monk, a girl who grows up into a young woman, a prison inmate, a foul-mouthed doctor and the young son of a hard drinking astronomer. Each of them tell the boy to seek someone to help him find the truth and his mother.
