目黒競馬場近くの祐天寺山形厩舎に日本ダービー開催の知らせがもたらさせたのは昭和7年初頭。山形正吉はダービーまでの息災を祈った。自己に厳しい正吉は妻や子供、騎手や馬手、山形厩舎に所属する人間全員に対しても厳格であった。ダービーに優勝する事は馬を見る眼、馬を育てる腕が日本一と証明する事である。騎手になった正吉にとって馬こそ人生のすべてであった。昭和7年4月24日、第1回日本ダービーは正吉の騎乗する馬は2着。同じく悔し涙にくれ関西競馬界の展望を担っていた加藤直吉を知る。後に、ふたりは最も仲の良い友人であり喧嘩友達であり競争相手となった。第3回ダービーは新装なった東京競馬場で行われたが正吉は肺炎の為は病床にあり、若い騎手の成長ぶりをみて調教で生き抜こうと決心する。太平洋戦争が終わり競馬が開催された。正吉は直吉から託されたタチカゼの調教に熱中していた。第16回ダービーは正吉の期待に応えタチカゼが優勝。京都で病床にあった直吉は生涯最高の知らせを聞きつつ息をひきとっていった…。
