Drama of the life of a peasant family, who came to work in the fisheries of Astrakhan. The film is set in the late XIX - early XX centuries.

Based on the novel of the same name by Konstantin Fedin. 1910. A small town in the Volga region. Kirill Izvekov, a student of a technical school, is only looking for his place in life, and revolutionary struggle is unfolding around him.

Two kings: Fedot and Amphibrachiy have been adjoining peacefully for many years. But once Amphibrachiy disappeared, and it became difficult for queen to cope with affairs. The state began to fall into decay. Also daughter Alyona absolutely got out of control. So mother decided to marry her. The king Fedot had three sons: Paul-tsarevitch, Peter-tsarevitch and Ivan-tsarevitch, whom everybody considered to be a fool. But he managed to gain Alyona's heart and, having won Kashchei the Immortal, set free the king Amphibrachiy.

Dmitry Gorin is awaiting the post of branch manager of a savings bank. But one day he accidentally gives an extra amount to a person who works in the taiga on the construction of the Siberia-Ural power transmission line. To return the money, Dmitry has to go to the taiga. But he is not in a hurry to return to Moscow. The fact is that he discovers a completely different life, which he likes, and meets the girl he dreamed of

Terenty leaves the collective farm and goes to the city to study to become an agronomist. Marina works hard and looks forward to her husband's return. When her husband returns home, he reproaches his wife for being uneducated, asks for a divorce and leaves for the city. Left with her daughter, Marina devotes herself entirely to her studies and work.
