在曼努艾尔．德．奥利维拉1997年的作品《世界起点之旅》中，他请意大利著名演员马尔塞洛．马斯特罗亚尼扮演一个年老的导演，其实就是扮演他自己，影片几乎是一部纪录片，摄影机漫游在公路、河畔，以及绿荫繁茂的林间的那座童年的豪华旅馆，现在那些只是残墙断垣建筑被老人的笑容唤醒。在追寻自己记忆的过程中，导演在路旁一个民舍门前驻足，他发现了一座小小的雕像，一个戴着帽子的男人永远扛着一根大木头。乡人告诉导演一首相关的民谣：“我是彼德罗．马考；我背上背一根大木头；许多人从这里经过；有的是一幅白色嘴脸；另一些是一幅黑色嘴脸，但是，……谁都不带我脱离苦海！”在影片的结尾的最后的镜头，导演对助手说：“你也是一个彼德罗．马考，永远不能脱离苦海”。这也是奥立维拉对自己的感叹，他一辈子探求着那测不准的人类情感世界的原理，一辈子脱离不了这个苦海。那年奥利维拉快90岁了，而2002年他93岁的时候拍摄出的最新作品的片名就是《测不准原理》。
