ドサ廻りの劇団ヴアンベールに属する加地茂樹、里村東介、奈々子の三人は、座長林の悪辣さに憤慨して脱退した。帰京した茂樹と東介は、エキストラ等をして働らいていた。茂樹は新映撮影所の宣伝部員北野に勧められ、ニューフェイスに応募した。宮森宣伝部長と沖山プロデューサーの目にとまった茂樹は、映画界に入り、一躍ベラテン女優京極真弓とのコンビで圧倒的な人気を得た。得意絶頂の茂樹は、真弓と乱脈な愛欲の生活を送り、彼を愛する奈奈子に冷く当った。入気スターとしてチヤホヤされてのぼせ上り、茂樹は自分の仕事に勝手な注文をつけ、また出演料の増額を要求した。彼の態度に怒った会社の幹部等は、彼の代りに新人の谷徹郎を起用した。慌てた茂樹は東亜映画へ出演を依頼したが、所長から真弓とのコンビならと言われ真弓を誘うが、相手にされなかった。一方、東介は地味ではあるが脇役として演技を認められ、奈々子と結婚をするという順調な道を進んだ。誰からも相手にされない落ち目の茂樹は、酒場で谷に会い喧嘩を売るが、バーテンに殴り倒された。顔中に包帯を巻いた茂樹は、東介と奈々子の結婚式に駈付け、二人に祝辞を述べるが、居並ぶ人人の好奇な眼差しから逃れる様に去った。式場を出た茂樹は、雨の街角の到る所に大きく張られた新人スター谷のポスターを食い入るように見つめていた。
