漫才師や作家としても活躍する島田洋七が、自身の原作「佐賀のがばいばあちゃん」を映画化。昭和33年、居酒屋で働く母子家庭で育った昭広は小学校に入学すると、超がつくほど貧乏なばあちゃんの家に預けられてしまう。初めは不慣れな田舎暮らしに戸惑う昭広だったが、生きる知恵とトンチのきいた明るいばあちゃんに育てられ、すくすくと成長してゆく。
