"Dewajtis" is one of Maria Rodziewiczówna's best-known moral novels, written in 1889. In seven episodes of the series about love, honor and family, the fate of a backwater and manor community, whose life was changed by the January Uprising, intertwines. The dying father's order imposes a new duty on young Marek Czertwan - he is to take care of the Poswicie estate, left by his father's missing friend, the insurgent magnate Kazimierz Orwid. How will Marek, forced to take care of the estate in Poswicie, cope with the new situation? Will he succumb to the charm of Irena, the rightful heiress of the manor? The heroes' ideals will be put to a severe test, and their desires will come into conflict with the obligations imposed by the family. The title Dewajtis, an ancient oak, casts a soothing shadow over the estate, which becomes a kind of escape from the hardships of life for the characters and a majestic symbol of intergenerational community.

This film is a sequel to Munk's Zezowate Szczescie and it's much the same, only more so. The film begins in a cinema, where the last scenes of Zezowate Szczescie are being shown. Born unlucky, a victim of the errors and distortions of Stalinism, he is released in 1956. He meets a politically feverish woman, her influential parents, and finally becomes the father of her child. But bad luck, or perhaps an unlucky era, will not let him forget.
