《伪君子》写伪装圣洁的教会骗子答尔丢夫混进商人奥尔恭家，图谋勾引其妻子并夺取其家财，最后真相败露，锒镗入狱。剧作深刻揭露了教会的虚伪和丑恶，答尔丢夫也成为“伪君子”的代名词。其剧作在许多方面突破古典主义的陈规旧套，结构严谨，人物性格和矛盾冲突鲜明突出，语言机智生动，手法夸张滑稽，风格泼辣尖利，对世界喜剧艺术的发展有深远的影响。
