Carved into the iron belly of an ancient earth-splitting machine, millions live forgotten in the dark. For a discarded half-caste tender working the Rot Pools, life is an endless rhythm of bone choppers, three-hour safety shifts, and grease. But an accidental bulkhead rupture offers a fleeting, blinding glimpse of the surface sky—a city shining in "pestilent colors."

Driven by an ambition to escape the grinder, they apprentice under an Overcrafter to hunt a surface-born rat. But in the deep crust, every scheme is someone else's slaughterhouse, and no one climbs out of the dark clean.
