A Really Good, Moody Cowboy Picture
A beautifully shot film with a really stacked cast of supporting character actors. I love seeing guys ranging from Sam Rockwell to Garret Dilliahunt to even small roles by the likes of Michael Parks and Mary-Louise Parker doing their things while Casey Affleck probably gives one of his best performances here. Brad Pitt, however, doesn't give a particularly great performance, he's mostly just playing himself as a cowboy rather than anything as transformative as some of the other actors, and I don't understand why anybody casts Jeremy Renner.
The cinematography is one of the absolute best things about this film, it is gorgeous and the framing and lighting are killer. The plot moves quite slowly and is focused on developing characters through their words more than action, which I don't dislike even if I wish there had been a bit more action. The screenplay is pretty well written even if I'm not a huge fan of its use of expository narration that I think could have been handled more creatively.
I really dug the film, and would watch it again. Not bad for a $1 DVD thrift store pickup.
