Offbeat coming of age movie
A repressed teenage girl's first sexual experiences are complicated when she discovers that she's not like other girls: she has the mythical condition vagina dentata. Jess Weixler skillfully handles a complicated role, gradually going from a repressed girl to a young woman who is more comfortable in her own skin and less likely to be pushed around by the men in her life. The premise of the movie basically demands that viewers get to see severed penises, and the film delivers on that aspect. But the dark comedy aspects fall flat; it's hard to chuckle at a movie with so much sexual assault. Apart from her stepdad (who seems like a standup guy), every man shown onscreen is a predator. The poor girl can't even go to the doctor without him trying to take advantage of her. It felt like the movie was trying to emphasize the empowering aspect of the teeth and how the protagonist Dawn has a pretty potent weapon with which to protect herself, but taken as a whole the movie felt more depressing than darkly comedic.
