The Woman (2011)

While hunting one day, a man discovers an injured wild woman while hunting in the woods. Naturally, he immediately constructs a prison for her in his cellar and returns to capture her the next day. Seemingly a mild-mannered lawyer, the man is the brutal and misogynistic patriarch of a terrified and abused family, and the feral woman he's imprisoned becomes another victim for him to dominate in the name of "civilizing" her.

For much of the movie the performances are fairly subdued, but violent outbursts become more common in the second half. The casting is quite good; the kids do look quite a bit like their fictional parents. The soundtrack is obtrusive and ill-fitting, it's "The director knows a guy" standard and not up to the level of quality of the rest of the movie. There's some exploration of the themes of man vs woman and civilization vs barbarism, but they're not as well-developed as they could've been. While I don't agree with viewers who compare this movie with the New French Extremity movement, it's gory and heavy and may be an uncomfortable watch for sensitive folks.
