a review of 白头神探

after feeling mildly disappointed by the new Naked Gun, I decided to go watch the original films again, to see whether they still hold up and my generally positive impression of them was justified. Just.. wow, no, not in the least. this is really bad. I was expecting the presence of OJ Simpson to be one of the more jarring things in the film but he's basically fridged in the first few minutes and a one note punchline the rest of the time. The rep this film has for being a joke every 20 seconds is unjustified. (Maybe the Airplane films are a bit better? Further research beckons). The jokes, where they exist, are ponderous, slow, absurdly telegraphed, and frequently outright sexist/racist/classist. The opening bit following a disembodied police siren through a number of ridiculous scenes is decent absurdist humor, but the entire rest of the film is a waste.
