Does this movie justify its existence? Surprisingly yes. The themes of journalism dying in the social media age are quit poignant and it brings all the pieces it needs in. Does it do a good job of telling that story? Not especially. This film, to a much larger extent than the first one, doubles down on a #girlboss approach to critiquing capitalism, which leaves any attempt to explore what the film has to say about those themes feeling kind of vapid. Now, does this film escape the feeling that it’s a piece of fan-fiction turned into a cash grabs sequel? Absolutely not. Does the movie do a good job at telling that story? Undoubtedly so. You take a bunch of incredibly charismatic and compelling characters and play with them like toys for two hours- you’re bound to have a good time. If you had fun with the first you’ll have fun again.
